âAngel, baby! Youâre back!â he shouted over the music, his arms going wide as if he were coming in for a hug.
I sidestepped him, not in the least bit interested in acting like we were old friends. âIâm only here for the payout that you owe me. Nothing else.â
Danny chuckled and lit a cigarette. âRight down to business, eh? I wasnât even sure if my prize dancer was alive. Good to know those Carlotti boys are taking care of you. You look hot as shit, Angel.â
Knowing full well it was a terrible idea to even acknowledge the guys around the obvious eavesdroppers, I shook my head.
âNo idea what youâre talking about. Iâve just been laying low. Now, my money?â
Danny sighed. âFine, fine. I get it. Your lips are sealed. Come with me.â He motioned for me to follow him toward the office.
I did so without a word, not wanting to say a damn thing else concerning the Carlottis or anything related to them.
âSo, where you been staying and when you coming back?â Danny asked as we entered the office. He sat at his desk, opening a locked drawer to pull out a wad of cash.
âHere and there. And Iâm not. Moving on to other things,â I replied vaguely.
Danny scowled, his hands stilling. âWhat? But youâre my best girl!â
âWhy the hell would I come back after what happened with Trixie?â
Dannyâs scowl deepened. âDamn shame what happened to her. But business ainât the same without ya, kid.â
I shrugged. âYouâll figure it out, Danny. You always do.â
He bobbed his head and finished counting out my money. Standing, he walked around the desk and handed it over. âWell, if you change your mind, you know where to find me.â
I quickly took the cash and shoved it into my pocket. âNot likely. Thanks anyway, Danny.â I turned to leave, ready to finally close the door on this chapter of my life. As much as it had done for me, keeping me off the streets, it had also been the catalyst for my descent into addiction.
As I went to close the door behind me, Danny said, âTake care of yourself.â
I didnât acknowledge him and kept my head down as I made a quick detour to the dressing rooms where my locker was. Luckily, the key to the locker was still hidden behind an old wall socket that no longer worked. I snatched it up and quickly unlocked it, retrieving my items with a small measure of surprise. Iâd thought Danny wouldâve broken into the thing, clearing out anything remotely valuable. Guess he really had expected me to come back to work.
I hugged my slouchy faux-leather purse to me and dug through it, finding my phone down at the bottom. The thing was useless, completely dead after not having been charged in so long. I stowed it in my pocket, putting the money Danny had given me into my wallet, then stilled when I saw my glass pipe still sat in the back of the locker. It was tempting to take that with me as well.
